The quaint sea-side town of Hermanus lies nestled between the majestic Kleinriver mountains and the brilliant waters of Walkerbay. Visitors to the town can therefore experience the abundant nature and wildlife that is unique to the area, ranging from the baboons and small antelope that call the fynbos-covered mountains home, to the Southern Right whales which visit the bay every year to mate, calve and rear their young.

Hermanus came to be when and educated gentlemen by the name of Hermanus Pieters, after having spent time travelling through the Caledon area teaching and shepherding at local farms, decided to travel through the Hemel-en-aarde valley looking for pasturing land for his flocks. He then stumbled onto the magnificent bay that is present day Hermanus. Pieters tended to his flocks at a spring next to the sea (“fontein” in Afrikaans) and it was this spring that visitors to the area called “Hermanus Pietersfontein”. A few years after the town was established in 1893, the towns name was shortened by the postmaster to Hermanus, and ever since the towns name has been well-known worldwide for being a place of beauty, rest and warmth.

Visitors are hard pressed to choose between spending their time immersed in the areas nature, or to partake in the vast amount of activities that the town has to offer. In the span of a day one can have breakfast in a quaint coffee shop, followed by kayaking with whales in the bay; spend time shopping in the many exclusive boutiques and stores, have lunch overlooking the Old Harbour, relax on the beach after going shark cage diving, and dining out in one of the many world-class restaurants in the town.
